The Sign
by Geraldine Seaton
Two rabbits were sitting in the middle of a vegetable
garden. The rabbits sat contentedly on their haunches while trying
to decide what they would nibble on next.
Peter said to his companion, Charlie, "Man, what a great day.
The weather is perfect." Peter was a "know-it-all,"
always trying to show off. Most of the other animals simply ignored
him.
Charlie had just finished eating a tasty carrot. He clicked his
big buck teeth and nodded in agreement.
The rabbits slowly hopped through the garden, stopping occasionally
to nibble. Their feared enemy was Farmer Brown and they were always
on the lookout for him.
Suddenly, they spotted something new in the garden. It was a sign.
Even though Peteer had no idea what the sign said, he couldn't let
Charlie know that. Finally, Peter said, "The sign says to help
your self to fresh vegetables."
Charlie saw Farmer Brown heading their way with his shotgun. Charlie
hopped out of the garden, leaving Peter to fend for himself. Farmer
Brown lifted the gun to his shoulder, located Peter in his site,
and squeezed the trigger.
That evening the farmer's family enjoyed a delicious rabbit stew.
Charlie figured out that the sign contained a warning to stay out
of the garden, which he didn't do, but he vowed to keep a sharper
lookout for the farmer.
