September 2006 Honorable Mention
Closed For The Season
by Sheila Cassidy
On the map it looked like an easy hike from
the road up to the Mirror lakes. So John decided to take the boys,
Buzz and Butch.
Our neighbors dropped us off. I thought I detected some outright
glee in their expressions, as they sped away. The start of the trail
looked like Mount Everest with the jungle thrown in.
“John, the trail looks awfully steep.”
“Don’t worry, honey, it’s only for a mile or less.”
OK, so we strapped on our backpacks and struggled up. Not even 30
minutes had passed before Buzz and Butch started:
“Mom, are we there yet?”
“We’re tired, Mom. Can we stop for awhile?”
Then we got to this clearing. It had about three different trails
leading away from it. No signs. We peered anxiously at the Forest
Service Map. It didn’t show three trails. John frowned.
“This is the wrong map.”
I couldn’t resist.
“Maybe we can go back and ask for a refund?”
So we closed our eyes, threw a rock, and decided to follow whatever
trail it landed on. When we got to a stream, we tried to walk across
the rocks, but Buzz and Butch slipped, so we had to change their
socks. We clawed our way on up the trail, our chests heaving with
every step.
Finally, we saw a sign, “Mirror lakes” with an arrow
pointing ahead. With shaky knees and growling stomachs, we came
to another sign…and a chain across the trail.
