Honorable Mention Moving On
by Mike Dunn
A tear rolled down Eugene's cheek as the wrecking ball took the first swing. Soon, the lighthouse he had presided over for the past thirty years would be nothing more than a pile of rubble. He brushed the salty drip away and turned to leave.
Most people thought of Eugene as a hermit. He considered himself to be a lover. It just so happened that he loved his privacy more than anything...which is perfectly fine by any lighthouse keeper's standards. Eugene also had the certain innate ability that enabled him to warn off people from getting too close...also, another admirable trait for any lighthouse keeper to possess. This "gift" had made itself abundantly apparent at certain instances in the man's life. There was the Prom night that ended abruptly when Eugene accidentally stabbed his date with the corsage. The school ended up changing the theme of the dance from "A Time to Remember..." to " Blood on the Dance Floor". Then there was the time when his parking brake gave out and he unintentionally backed over his best friend. He didn't off the poor guy, but he did leave him with only one leg...which is all you really need to hobble away from Eugene.
The man cringed at the sound of the demolition as he walked away. Out of a job and low on cash, Eugene needed to move on to survive. So, he headed to the one place his skill set would come in handy...the DMV.
