July 2006 Honorable Mention
Mary Had A Gift
by Mike Dunn
Mary had a gift. Ducking under the yellow
police tape, she made her way
onto the crime scene. It took all of five seconds before the young
detective approached her. "What in
the hell do you think you're doing?"
"Why don't you ask your chief? He's
got me on speed dial." Mary replied coolly, passing him by.
"Look, I.we don't.hey!" He sputtered
on, but she had more pressing
issues to deal with than breaking in the rookie. Mary took in a
deep breath and placed her hand on the road sign. Visions began
to overtake her. Route 66. America. Black top pavement for as far
as the eye could see. The smell of exhaust heavy in the afternoon
air. Then it became clear to her.
"This was no accident." Mary said.
"Thanks for the insight, Kreskin. What
gave it away.the murder weapon or the killer's note?"
"Do I have to go over your head or
do you want to look like the hero?"
The detective didn't say another word. Mary
knelt down to the ground and placed her ear on the roadside gravel.
He rolled his eyes.
"Saw that. Psychic, not stupid."
Mary quipped. "Give me the letter."
The detective fetched the killer's note. She looked it over.
"Missouri."
"What?"
"That's where your killer is."
She handed the letter back and headed for
her car. Yes, Mary had a gift. Without a single psychic bone in
her body she had managed to get the LAPD to finance her road trip.
