Is That It?
by Paul Halewijn
Staring at object behind the glass, Secret Agent
Armstrong leans in for a closer look. The aroma is unfamiliar yet
hugely appetizing, he is starving, no lunch yet. The lab door opens,
as the boss strolls in, Armstrong acts busy.
“Is that it?” Bentley asks. Armstrong steps away from
the glass forgetting his hunger for the moment. “Security
found this trapped inside an old freezer, buried outside the safe
zone. It appears to be some kind of multi layered food”. Bentley
nods knowingly.
“Sir, I ran diagnostics and found several distinct design
strains, protein, carbohydrate, and…” Bentley holds
up his hand for silence
“Armstrong, in the old days before PETA took over, animals
were used, as a primary food source, cows mostly.” Both men
stared at the object, Armstrong, practically drooling, licking his
lips, picturing the object begging to be eaten. .
“What we have here Armstrong, is a Cheeseburger.
A prehistoric, cardiac monster, banned almost 200 years ago”.
“It sure does smell tasty Sir! Could we try it? I mean eat
some of it? All of it?” Bentley ponders the request, rubs
his chin, smiles and nods. “Armstrong, it’s all yours!”
“Oh boy! I am sooooo hungry!”
“Sooooo hungry, soooo hungry, mmmmmmmm,
so hungry. Gasping awake, “what, where am I?” Sitting
up, Armstrong, looks around, and remembers where he is, stranded on
a deserted island dreaming of a cheeseburger and cool drink. Waves
of hunger wash over him. He lies back down to sleep, dying, delirious.
“Mmmmmmmmm, cheeseburgers."
