April 2006 Honorable Mention
Only An Eye Opener
by Polly Dunn

“Neither a door nor a portal be…these words the ancient Druids left us…” and the savvy native guide pointed to the wooden covering at the entrance to the building made of stones.
One of the tourists had had enough. Angrily, he asked, “Why are we paying $229.95 extra over the cost of the regular tour? Aren’t we going to see inside?”
“He’s right,” another in the group spoke up, “for the price of this tour I want to see more than the outside of an old door.” The group began to mumble rebelliously. If the tour guide was at all alarmed, he handled it well.

“Let me guess," the first upset tourist yelled out, "You're a Druid?"
“Yes, sir, we built Stonehenge for your amazement and now we have this door. The guide smiled sheepishly. Our regular tour is self-guided. I am your philosophical leader on this tour for that extra price. Now, should you wish to see Stonehenge itself, we have a discount rate that might interest you or….” The guide winked… “post cards are available for a lesser price as if you had already visited there. We Druids are very smart.”
