Honorable Mention
The Rock Tryst

While walking along a desert mountain road, I see
a stone shed that oddly beckons to me. I approach the door and notice there
was once a latch, but has been crudely ripped off leaving scars in the wood.
Someone labored hard to build this domicile. Was it a hide-away? Is treasure
hidden here? Or a pioneer's first crude home?
A rusted hatchet lay near the door. I chop at the rotting
wood. Dirt flies and the boards easily give way, inviting me into its inner
sanctum. I step inside and accustom my eyes to the dark interior. To my horror,
I see two skeletons entwined around one another in a dust-covered bed. Their
skulls are crushed. I instinctively drop the hatchet — apparently the
murder weapon. Who are these people, and why were they slaughtered?
On a table next to the bed is a leather booklet. I scrape off the layers
of dust and carefully open the crumbling diary. Although the writing is barely
visible on the dry, flaking pages, I'm able to decipher dates and tender
sentiments of forbidden love.
Unlike the earlier delicate entries, The final words are written in a large
uneven scrawl:
YOU STOLE NELLIE FROM ME. I'LL MEET YOU IN HELL TO RE-CLAIM HER.
