September
Honorable Mention
Madeline Awaiting Madness
by Dr. Joyce Wheeler
Philip had stocked his lake with swans, provided
picnic baskets, canoes and champagne so festive wedding guests would be occupied
while he ravaged Madeline immediately after the vows.
While engage, he had declared, “All science is either Physics or stamp
collecting.” She expected a passive lover, much like her deferential
deceased husband. When Philip provided diamonds he stated, “A large
amount of energy is bound up in every material thing.”
Soon after Pierre Curie was fatally run over by a carriage while crossing
a street in Paris, Marie Curie indiscreetly absorbed Philip’s dynamism,
with fervor. Marie suggested a scientific retreat to the Glen Springs Hotel
(in the finger Lakes region of New York), which featured a radioactive mineral
springs. Philip, captivated, retreated with Marie after, explaining to Madeline
that she would be bored with the scientific patois. She surmised that Philip
had discovered she was elegant yet dull.
Philip controlled Madeline on a miniscule level: Before commissioning the
portrait artist for his absence he scrubbed Madeline’s teeth with a
fashionable paste containing radioactive Thorium. Then, he booked passage
to New York for himself and Marie, while Madeline Posed, wearing a white
chiton sloping off pale shoulders, mink cape cascading down her back while
erectly balancing a black lace chapeau.
She should never submit to Philip again. Madeline had manipulatively inquired
of him, “Whom do you admire?” (assuming he would blurt ‘Marie
Curie.’) But, he had stared at her swanlike throat and declared, huskily, “Count
Donatien deSade.”
