Honorable Mention
All Fall Down

It was my turn to watch the children and playing
outdoors seemed like the best thing to do. The sunny morning made it easy
for the children to go outside and out they went running through the doors
eager, smiling under the blue sky above. The children were being just that,
children. It was early and still cool so we played a game of fall down. They
would follow me around crouched low watching my steps closely until I sprung
high shooting my arms and hands to the sky. They would quickly drop and cover
themselves. The last one down would be out. My version of musical chairs
was also my secret code for duck and cover. They loved our game and giggled,
screamed and cried when we played it.
The last duck and cover drill ended when my fingers melted together, my hair
burst into flames and my clothing became my skin. A flash, a sting, and then
silence. I am drifting now watching the men look for us. I didn’t know
concrete could burn, but it does and has a very strange smell to it.
When they finally came to find us we were all but gone. The children were now
little piles of stuff that showed where they were that last split second. I was
turned into a filmy human negative, emulsion of molecules and matter once belonging
to the soul. The children simply ceased but my lucky shadow remained.
The bomb dropped on me today.
