January 2005 Honorable Mention
Lost
by Mike Dunn
One week had passed since my trusted
companion Jake and I decided to leave camp and explore the uncharted forest.
Our ill-planned attempt at adventure had left us with little more than a
pair of rumbling stomachs and an overwhelming sense of impending doom. The
meager leavings near an all but dry creek bed were enough to keep us amongst
the living, but it wouldn’t last for long. We needed something substantial…something
with flavor. It was at this, our most hungry state, that we stumbled upon
the same knotted husk of a tree that we had seemed to pass three times before...and
that’s when things took a turn for the worse.
"Haven’t we passed this tree
before, Steak?"
"What?"
"I said, haven't we passed this
tree before, Jake?"
"That's not what you said."
I knew it wasn’t, but I had to try my best to cover it up. I turned
away from Jake in hopes that he didn’t quite hear me clearly.
"You called me 'Steak'."
"Look, it was a mistake. Mmmm…steak “
"Hey! Don’t look at me like
that! he shrieked.
"Oh, give it a rest. I’m not
going to eat you!" After staring
at me for a second longer, he focused back on the contorted mass in front
of us.
"We should mark the tree, that way
we’ll know if we’re
crossing our own tracks," he suggested.
"Agreed."
When Jake took out his knife and carved an "A-1" into the wood,
I prayed for a quick rescue.> |
