February
Honorable Mention
Fruit of the Loom
by Mike Dunn
Martha's withered fingers went to work.
Her crinkled features folded into a smile as the thread slid through the
eye of the needle like it had so many times before. There was a certain sense
of comfort in this for Martha. Her tired eyes seemed to glimmer as she sat
back and began pumping the old
wooden pedal. Memories washed over the woman as the machine cranked out
it's familiar rhythm. Even though it had been eons since her Mother first
taught her the craft, she couldn't help but think that she was still
watching over her every little stitch. The blanket she had learned on had
long since deteriorated into a tangled mess of shredded material and tattered
threads, but she still kept a piece of it tucked away beside her
bed for sentimental purposes.
Despite the clear skies above, the roar of thunder
bellowed in the
distance. Martha looked up from her work and down the dusty road at a
rapidly growing speck. The roar grew louder as the speck sparkled brightly
in the summer sky. With renewed fervor, she sped to finish the job. Martha
yanked out her work and slid it on as her biker boyfriend, Gonzo, pulled to
a stop.
"Nice work, Martha." he growled.
She hopped on the Harley with one quick glance
down at the new patch on her
leather jacket -- "Heavy Metal Mama".
