February
Honorable Mention
A California Spin
by Polly Dunn
“Spin me some gold, old lady!” the
physically fit governor demanded.
“Show me where it says my name is Rumplestiltskin,” she
fired back at him.
“Don’t get smart with me…” and he hovered over the old
woman sitting at the spinning wheel.
“Or what will you do? Grope me?”
He didn’t answer. He simply sneered.
The woman began to work the treadle with her feet…slowly at first, but
then she began to build up a steady rhythm.
“I’ll be back…” he said as he walked away.
The old lady just shook her head. He always uses that line, she thought.
Time passed and the angular jawed man returned.
“This isn’t gold!” he cried out, seeing the results of her
work.
The woman stopped her spinning and stared at the Herculean form that now stood
in front of her.
"Did you grow up in Austria or something?
What kind of a barbarian are you? I can't spin gold. I am just an old actress
who can't find work any more." She stood up and put her hands on her hips to
emphasize her disgust.
A tear began to form in the corner of the governor’s eye.
“I feel like such a girly man,” he said, “Now how will I solve
the budget crisis?”
“You could tax your well known lines?” she offered.
“I don’t know what you mean” he said bewildered.
“Hasta la vista, baby!” and she handed him a dollar and left. |
