April
Honorable Mention
House Of Giggles
by Gerri Seaton
It was almost midnight. Travis had been backed into a corner by his friends. They had dared him to spend a night at the old Willis house at the end of his street. He was to enter the house at midnight, and emerge the next morning, hopefully healthy and alive.
The house had been abandoned years ago by John Willis, whose wife and four children had died from carbon dioxide poisoning. John survived because he was out of town on business. The ghosts of his family roamed the rooms and hallways, looking for an escape, according to local youth.
When Travis arrived with his sleeping bag, snacks, a flashlight, and a bottle of water, his friends were waiting. They hooted and hollered and teased but Travis smiled and proceeded to enter through a broken window on the front porch. He crawled through and quickly disappeared.
His friends watched from their perch in an old elm tree. Soon, lights and noises came from the first floor. Was Travis crying and wailing? Each boy wished he were home, safe in bed.
As Travis' friends waited anxiously outside, he was comfy and enjoying himself. Earlier, he had taken a small battery operated television set into the house and was now watching a Three Stooges movie. TV sounds and laughter beat the sounds of ghosts any old day. |
